Materials, plainly

What each family of pieces actually contains, and what that means for wearing and keeping it.

• Jewellery

  Brass or alloy, plated gold, silver or rose gold.

  No gold, no solid silver. The colour is that of the precious metal; the material is not.

• Stones

  Rhinestone and cut glass, hand-set or glued depending on the piece.

  No precious stones and no branded crystal, whatever name the market gives them.

• Textiles

  Organza, satin, velvet, tulle, ribbons; embroidery in metallic thread.

  No silk and no real gold thread. Fold without pressing the embroidery.

• Wood and trays

  Lacquered or painted wood, embossed metal, mirror and resin for some trays.

  Neither silverware nor solid copper. The trays are for presenting, not for cooking.

The shop, in the order of the night

1. Bridal jewelleryKhit errouh, tikka, mahzma, khelkhal, msayess, complete parures. The pieces the bride wears, in the tone her outfit sets — gold for the chedda and the karakou, silver for Kabyle dress.
2. Hair & veilTaj, hair jewellery, pins and combs. What the machta sets into the chignon, piece by piece, between one outfit and the next.
3. Trousseau & storageGarment bags, hangers, jewellery cases, and the evening bags for the trousseau: the minaudière and the embroidered clutch. What the machta carries from one salon to the next, what protects the outfits between the house and the hall, and what the family packs into the jhaz.
4. CeremonyTrays, ring cushions, embroidered cloths, bottles. The objects that pass from hand to hand in front of the guests, and get photographed close up.
5. Hall & guestsChair sashes, favour bags, gift boxes, light garlands. What the guests see, and what they take home with them.
