The piece
A kuka misbaha is the gift laid on the groom's tray, given to a father for Eid or to a hajji coming home. This one has 99 round beads of 6 mm for tasbih, split into three times 33 by two separators. It ends in an imame, the long head piece, then a braided cord with three small beads and an end piece. Beads, separators, imame and end piece are all kuka, with no metal part. Kuka, often called "kuka wood", is in fact the very hard shell of a palm seed: it polishes like wood, keeps its natural veining and takes on a patina with use. Each bead differs a little, so no two misbahas are quite alike. It comes in a round box, ready to give. Not gold, not amber, not stone: kuka, a plant material.
