The piece
The everyday misbaha: 33 capsule-cut kuka beads, small rounded cylinders that slide easily between the fingers, on a short cord that fits round the wrist. It ends in an imame, then a braided cord with two beads and an end piece, all kuka, no metal. Kuka is the very hard shell of a palm seed: it polishes like wood, keeps its natural veining and darkens with use. Light and discreet, it slips into a pocket; a small gift for the groom, a brother or Eid. Not gold, not amber, not stone: kuka, a plant material.
