The piece
The khit errouh — the thread of the soul — is worn across the forehead with the Algiers karakou or the Tlemcen chedda. This one is gold-plated metal, not an heirloom khit errouh: a row of rosettes set with rhinestones, linked by rings, with the teardrop pendants the trade calls zerraref. The machta centres it on the forehead, runs the chain above the ears and closes the clasp behind the head under the hair, at the traditional moment of the tasdira. The extender chain lets it come back as a necklace over the evening gown later in the night.
