The piece
The 33-bead misbaha is the one kept in a pocket and held in the hand through the day: three rounds make the 99. This one strings 33 round kuka beads of 8 mm, larger than a 99's, so they sit well in the hand. It ends in an imame, then a braided cord with three beads and an end piece, all kuka, no metal. Kuka is the very hard shell of a palm seed: it polishes like wood, keeps its veining and small natural marks, and takes on a patina with use. It goes with the 99 for a groom's gift as a pair, or on its own for Eid. Not gold, not amber, not stone: kuka, a plant material.
