The piece
The khelkhal is worn on both ankles under the hem of the gandoura or the caftan, and it is heard before it is seen. This one is plated brass, sold as a pair: at about 60 g a piece it is a heavy model, at the scale of the Chlef basin khelkhal, not a fine ankle chain. The machta puts it on at the start of an outfit change, before the hem is dropped, and it shows when the bride is led to her place. In silver-tone it reads as the traditional Chlef khelkhal; in gold-tone it answers the gold fetla of the outfit.
