The piece
Msayess are worn as a pair, one on each wrist, with the gandoura, the karakou or the caftan: they are the arm piece of the ceremonial parure of eastern Algeria, between the mahzma at the waist and the khelkhal. These are open cuffs in gold-plated brass with a filigree face — costume jewellery in non-precious metal, not the heirloom msayess a family keeps put away. Open in a C, they spread slightly to pass over the wrist and close again by hand, so there is no size to choose. The machta puts them on once the outfit is settled. Sold as a pair, never singly.
